STABILITY TESTING

Deadweight Surveys and Inclining Experiments

Gibbs & Cox, Inc is experienced in performing stability tests for new ship constructions and conversions.  Stability testing is a critical milestone for any ship program as it defines the actual displacement, center of gravity, and stability attributes of the vessel.  The time sensitive nature of testing mandates that it must be completed within a narrow time period, typically days, after construction and before sea trials.  These challenges are understood by Gibbs and Cox, Inc. and are accomplished with precision planning, accuracy and efficiency.   An in-depth knowledge of commercial requirements, as prescribed by CFR and ASTM–F1321, and the Naval Ship’s Technical Manual, Chapter 096, contribute to Gibbs and Cox’s qualification to meet the unique requirements of all clients.

Gibbs and Cox engineers are capable of supporting a variety of functions related to stability testing, specifically:

  • Planning and leading stability test programs including:
  • Developing test plan procedures for certifying agent’s approval.
  • Developing a ship’s stability model and producing hydrostatics.
  • Developing detailed agendas for shipyards and support activities.
  • Performing Naval Architecture and leadership functions for Lightweight (Deadweight) Surveys and Inclining Experiments.
  • Performing post test calculations and analyses to submit to certifying agents for approval.
  • Developing supplemental stability analyses and loading data to support owner, crew, certification, contract negotiations, etc.
  • Serving as customer representatives/witnesses:
  • Reviewing shipbuilder’s plans/procedures.
  • Witnessing and documenting shipbuilder’s Lightweight Surveys and Inclining Experiments.
  • Supporting weight accounting and contract penalty discussions.
