Explosives Safety Engineer


Gibbs & Cox, Inc., one of the nation’s leading independent naval architecture, marine engineering and design firm is seeking a well qualified individual for a position as an Explosives Safety Engineer for Navy Ship Design.

Position will involve providing oversight of weapons program safety effort to ensure compliance with weapons safety requirements.


  • Supports the development of design attributes and requirements to meet the various stake holder requirements from the Navy, Air Detachment, federal, state, to local agencies.
  • Identify, evaluate and manage safety and health hazards from early stage of designs through fleet operations.
  • Perform safety risk assessments for hazards that cannot be eliminated and and develop actions to midigate the hazards.
  • Provide continuous research on all safety requirements required under federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Maintain records of work related accidents, illness, chemical disposal and other records required by law
  • Supporting developing training material and training for the shipyards and ship programs.
  • Work independently (with moderate supervision), project teams, and/or closely with engineers of various disciplines to optimize the integration of safety into the total ship.
  • Support the development of test procedures and actual testing, such as but not limited to weapons stowage and handling systems to firefighting systems.
  • Support trade studies for vessel features, materials, and processes as they relate to safety.
  • Presents issues and solutions to audiences of varying sizes, such as the Navy Weapons Systems and Explosives Safety Board (WSERSB).
  • Able to supervise small numbers of junior staff on projects or teams.
  • Advises management and appropriate groups on support issues which impact customer satisfaction and provides recommendations for appropriate actions.


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education in Mechanical or Marine Engineering
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience.
